Pakistan Wheat Output Drops from Record Highs; Imports Revised Down
Pakistan wheat production for the 2025–26 season has been revised upward by 500,000 tonnes to 29 million tonnes, according to the latest report from the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). However, this is still 2.8 million tonnes below last year’s record output of 31.8 million tonnes. Decline in Sown Area and Yields The lower year-on-year production is primarily attributed to: A 5.5% drop in wheat acreage, driven by: The absence of a government-guaranteed support price prior to planting. Farmer uncertainty due to non-commitment on wheat procurement in 2025. High temperatures during sowing and a prolonged dry spell post-sowing, which led to a 3.3% decline in yield. Impact on Trade and Market Dynamics Wheat flour prices fell by 10% between June 2024 and May 2025, offering relief to consumers amid falling grain prices. Imports for 2025–26 have been halved to 1 million tonnes, reflecting improved production and higher carryover stocks. In 2024–25, only 100,000 tonnes were imported, due to the government import restrictions and a record domestic harvest.
