Government Wheat Sale under OMSS on Hold for Now

Wheat prices have remained stable in recent weeks, and there is adequate supply in the market, according to the Union Food Secretary. In light of this, the government has decided not to release wheat under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) for now. It is noteworthy that wheat prices had shown an upward trend over the past month. In the 202425 wheat season, the central government sold around 3 million tonnes of wheat under OMSS. In the previous 202324 season, wheat sales under OMSS had reached 10.1 million tonnes. However, market sources believe that to maintain supply stability, the release of government wheat under OMSS remains crucial. Despite this, the government has currently paused such sales due to stable pricing trends. Rice Sale under OMSS to Continue The Union Food Secretary also confirmed that the sale of government rice under OMSS will continue this year, with around 5 million tonnes expected to be sold in the open market. To improve quality, the percentage of broken rice (currently 25%) in this government-supplied rice will be reduced to 10%. Presently, this rice is mostly being supplied to distilleries. However, the government plans to auction this rice to private traders in the near future. Russia Removes Export Duty on Grains till August 31 Russia has lifted export duties on grains such as barley and maize until August 31, which is expected to reduce the import cost of these commodities. This move could lead to increased availability and potentially lower prices in the Indian market as well.
