Tur Prices Extend Fall Amid Weak Demand, but Strong Support Signals Possible Stabilization
The tur (pigeon pea) market has been declining for the past two weeks, and this trend continued on Monday, with prices in domestic markets falling by about ₹50. Although the market remains under pressure, there are signs of underlying support, so it would not be accurate to call it outright weak. Demand from domestic pulse mills is currently sluggish, which is keeping prices under pressure. The international market is also showing softness. In Chennai, imported lemon tur prices for AprilMay shipments dropped by about $10 to around $840 per ton (C&F), while old crop (2025) deals are steady near $830 per ton. In domestic mandis, evening prices showed lemon tur in Chennai and Mumbai down by ₹50 to ₹7,625, while Delhi remained stable at ₹7,825. For domestic varieties, mild declines were seen in Indore, Solapur, Akola, and Kanpur, while prices in other markets stayed steady. Imported tur also weakenedSudan origin fell by ₹50 to ₹6,850, while Gajri and White tur were quoted around ₹6,400 and ₹6,450 respectively. Cheaper imports have narrowed the price gap between imported and domestic tur, adding further pressure on local prices. Currently, mandi prices are about 56% below MSP. Government procurement at MSP is ongoing but limited in scale, with around 200,000 tons purchased so far. On the supply side, government central pool stocks are estimated at around 550,000 tons, which is not considered excessive. Stocks in many regions are also not particularly heavy. Looking ahead, last week saw a sharp drop of about ₹300 per quintal due to selling from Chennai, pushing lemon tur down to ₹7,750. However, selling pressure appears to be easing at lower levels. Traders report that landed prices from Yangon are still above ₹8,000, which is discouraging sellers from offloading at lower rates. Additionally, production is reported to be lower this season in Maharashtra and Karnataka, and the pressure of fresh arrivals in Karnataka has almost subsided. Overall, while the market is currently weak, strong support is emerging at lower levels. In the coming days, tur prices may stabilize and then gradually recover rather than continue falling sharply
